Interview with Roger Cooper from Panzera Watches

Panzera is a fast growing watch and pen company from Australia. I have recently had the opportunity to review their Aqua Marine 45 and the Breuer 42 watches. I got interested in doing an interview with Roger Cooper from Panzera to get to know mere about the company.

Read on and learn more about the past, present and future of Panzera Watches.

Can you tell us about Panzera, what is your history and why watches and pens?

Back in 2009 I started PANZERA with my business partner out of a passion for watches. We really liked the Flieger style pilots watch but couldn’t find one that was exactly the design and specification we liked or was in our budget.

Because of this we decided to design and produce our own Flieger Pilots Watch. The watch we created, the Flieger 47 Automatic ended up getting a lot of attention from friends, family and strangers and before long we had stores wanting to stock the watches.

One of the notable stockists back in the early days was a popular vintage motorbike/street fashion store called DEUS EX MACHINA. Our Flieger Pilots watches were a big hit with the motorbike crowd.

DEUS have  since expanded both in Australia and internationally, and we are proud to say we have been supplying them watches and pens for almost a decade. The Kaliber 50 pens were inspired around the DEUS customer too but have been extremely popular elsewhere especially in the military being a 50 Caliber bullet shell design.

Your collection of watches is pretty classic with flieger, diver and dress watches, but all with a modern touch. What is your philosophy behind the different types and designs of the watches?

Our vision is to create “modern-vintage” style products. The philosophy is to take a classic design and recreate them for the present time.

Panzera is an Australian company. What does your Australian heritage mean to you when you design new watches?

We are a proud Australian owned and operated company. There are not many watch companies in Australia so we are proud to pioneer the industry here for almost a decade.

The quality of the design and products that we produce in Australia I think are recognised as quite high and when a customer purchases a PANZERA watch they also get a piece of Australia which I think is quite appealing.

Your prices are in the affordable range, who is the typical buyer of a Panzera watch?

Originally we expected that the typical buyer of our watches would be the budget conscious consumer looking for a high quality watch that was a bit unique and not a mainstream brand that everyone else wears.

This is still a large part of our customer base, but we have found that we have a growing customer base of luxury watch buyers as well.

These customers usually are passionate about watches having a watch collection including high end brands, but they buy a PANZERA as there “every-day” watch.

Talking about the Breuer it is a very clean design in the vein of the famous German design school of Bauhaus, why did you choose the Bauhaus style?

Once again we personally like the Bauhaus style watch but we couldn’t find the right size, and specification that we would like to buy ourselves, so we built the Breuer 44 Automatic range.

At 44mm with Automatic Movement this was a unique Bauhaus style watch that no one else was making and it proved to be extremely popular.

This year we introduced the new Breuer 42 Automatic range. It has a redesign and at the smaller size (42mm) it is also popular with the ladies as well.

Can you tell us a bit about any future watches coming from Panzera?

Well we don’t like to give too much away as the watch industry is quite competitive, but what I can say is that we have a new mechanical chronograph currently under development.

We also keep all our model ranges fresh usually every 12 -24 months, with either a completely new range design or introduction of limited edition models. It may be of interest to note that it takes us 2 years of development before we introduce any new models or collections.

It is imperative to ensure PANZERA products meet the expectations of the PANZERA customer in terms of quality, affordability and reliability so we take our time and go the extra mile to ensure we achieve these goals.
